Summary of February

Two months down, only ten more to go!

What can I tell you about February?

There have been some dramatic changes. I think my husband is starting to feel the Gumby love. He went so far as to suggest Gumby on a cheesehead for Superbowl Sunday, which is something I would have never thought of. He also ate all the gumdrops that were reserved for Gumdrop day, but at least I was able to reclaim the box. And to top it off, he also took his own Gumby/Oscar picture.

There have been some new additions to the Gumby collection. My husband also found the Gumby BBQ lighter. How it was misplaced, I have no idea, as it is rather large, but he has been reunited with the rest of the Gumby fold.

Ardent followers may have noticed this blog has been sporatic in February. That is because Gumby’s One and Two were leaking too much, but I am now the proud owner of Gumby Three, which hopefully will have a long and happy life. The vendors for Gumby Three were kind enough to supply me with bonus Gumby material: a Christmas ornament and an Art Clokey (creator of Gumby) DVD.

As usual, some things did not go as planned. I failed in my attempt to make a stove pipe hat for Lincoln’s birthday, although I now know that Gumby’s head is 18” wide. My husband’s office is moving, so there were several large boxes in the studio, aka: the living room, which made shooting tough for a week or two.

The dramatic changes in Egypt prompted a spontaneous photo shoot.

Expenditures for February were high. Gumby Three was $150 and other related expenses came to $22.57.

Several people have asked me if this blog was inspired by “Julie and Julia”. While I have seen that movie several times, it was not on my mind when I decided to do this.

Hang on to your hats for March, and share the Gumby love.

Happy Floral Design Day!

Another lucky break. I had these leftover flowers from some party. And they match his skin tone! Thank you, Kerry.

Happy Academy Awards!

We still haven't seen most of the winning movies, but we went to an Oscar party which was good fun. Thank you Nellie's Sports Bar in DC, for awesome burgers, wings, and last but not least, the free Oscar trophy I had been looking for.

Happy National Snack Food Month!

This is not a snack food household, so this was the only wrapper I could find. Oh, well, onto the next day.

Happy National Chili Day!

I wasn't sure what to do about this day, and then I remembered I have these napkin holders with chili peppers on them. Another problem solved! Gumby and I think you should celebrate this with a big bowl of chili.

Happy Curling is Cool Day!

Of course curling is cool! It is one of our favorite sports during the Winter Olympics. What is there not to  love about a sport that combines sweeping, a big rock that looks like a tea kettle, and the precision of target shooting?

Happy World Thinking Day!

February has been a busy blog month for a number of reasons which will be detailed in my monthly summation. I thought this holiday was just a nice reminder to think globally and I knew I had a light bulb handy. I did not know the Girl Scouts were behind this until I was writing text for this post, or else I would have hit the local troop up for something more fitting. I promise to give them creds when my cookies arrive. In the meantime, here is some info on World Thinking Day:

"Thinking Day was first created in 1926 at the fourth Girl Guide/Girl Scout International Conference held at Girl Scouts of the USA's Camp Edith Macy (now called Edith Macy Conference Center). Conference attendees decided that there should be a special day for Girl Scouts and Girl Guides from around the world to "think" of each other and give thanks and appreciation to their "sister" Girl Scouts. The delegates chose February 22 as the date for Thinking Day because it was the mutual birthday of Lord Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scout movement, and his wife, Olave, who served as World Chief Guide."

Happy Love Your Pet Day!

Cats on the screen appear smaller than they are in real life. Thanks to Lazarus for not fleeing, which only goes to prove that everyone likes Gumby.

Happy Chocolate Mint Day!

This is not really a chocolate mint. They tend to melt under the harsh light of commercial photography Gumby has been become accustomed to. However, in a pinch, a green and yellow sponge with a bit of black magic marker and some duct tape does the trick. This was not an easily conceived fix, but another holiday conquered.

Happy Battery Day!

Today is the birthday of Alessandro Volta who invented the battery in 1800. I reapportioned the paper towel cardboard used for the Chinese New Year firecracker to make this sterling replica of a battery.

Happy National Gumdrop Day!

I had almost despaired of celebrating Gumdrop Day when I learned that my husband ate them, not realizing they were a prop for this blog. Thank God, I was able to salvage the box, and I wasn't sure how I was going to attach gum drops to Gumby anyway. To learn more about gumdrops than you will probably ever want to know, you can read this link: http://blog.fabulousfoodie.com/happy-national-gumdrop-day/

Happy Valentine's Day!

Meet Lucy, Gumby's first date! Aren't they a handsome couple? Thanks to Tracy for being the matchmaker.

Happy White Shirt Day!

Here's a link to the history of White Shirt day. http://www.co.genesee.mi.us/prosecutors/White%20Shirt%20Day.htm

We are also celebrating Egyptian Liberation Day. Power to the people!

Happy Umbrella Day!

If your weather does not warrant an umbrella, rent "Singing in the Rain". Gumby does not recommend using your eye to hold up your umbrella, but sometimes one does what one has to do.

Happy Boy Scout Anniversary Day!

On this day in 1910, William D. Boyce incorporated the Boy Scouts of America. Thank you Takoma Park Troop 33 for lending me this neckerchief. They do not know me at all, but they were willing to lend a hand for this somewhat odd project.

Happy Ballet Day!

It was not easy getting this tutu on Gumby. I had to deflate him and start all over again. And Gumby and I thank Gillian for lending us her tutu, although it proved to be too small for him.

Happy Super Bowl XLV!

Of course, Gumby was rooting for Greenbay. Having lived in Pittsburgh for a year during my youth, I was supporting the Steelers. But congratulations to Greenbay.

Happy Ice Cream for Breakfast Day!

Rather cold for ice cream, but we are working with it. I suppose he should have had a nice lime sherbert. Thanks to Marina for giving me her styrofoam container as I was stuck for an ice cream prop for today.

Happy Chinese New Year!

This is the year of the Rabbit. Gumby and I have no idea what that means, but we are rabbit friendly. And it is easier to make a red firecracker than to try to come up with a rabbit.

Happy Hedgehog Day!

While the groundhog gets most of attention today, let us not forget the venerable hedgehog. I don't know if they can forecast the weather. Thank you to Ryan, for lending me his hedgehog. And a special shout out to my friend Hanna, who actually owns a hedgehog. Didn't have time to get Gumby and Penelope together, but here she is! Isn't she adorable?
